IT ONLY HURTS FOR A LITTLE WHILE

The Young Marines’ instructors diligently put Santa through a steady exercise regimen. They didn’t want to push him too hard but it was for his own good. He’d mastered resistance training, body-weight training, cardio (jumping jacks), stretching and even yoga — all designed to be playful but effective exercise. The Young Marines told him funny stories and kept him laughing as they went about their daily routine.

The following week they planned to add warm-up and cool-down exercises: Arm Circles, Side Stretch, Sit and Reach, Cat Back, Thigh Stretch, Pelvic Tilt, Cross-Over and Calf Stretches. Santa was still hoping and praying for a Christmas miracle. He was exercising as hard as he possibly could and never complained about the pitiful Meals Ready to Eat diet. In fact, he even made a big deal of pretending how g-o-o-o-o-d they were, smacking his lips and rubbing his oversized tummy.

The clock was ticking … Pepper was aware of each passing second.

Several days later, when Young Marine Sergeant Caleb knocked on Santa’s door, he was in for a big surprise — NO SANTA! He blew his whistle loudly and shouted to everyone that Santa was gone!

“Call out the Young Marines! How did he get past us?” they shouted. “Spread out and find him!” ordered their unit commander. “It’s not as though he could just disappear into thin air!”

“But sir,” began Young Marine Sergeant Caleb, “we had the area locked down. No one left their post, so there’s no way Santa could have wandered off on his own. He couldn’t have left his bedroom because I was right there outside the door!

“I believe you,” agreed Gunny Awesome. “But he’s gone and we have to find him! NOW!”

The Young Marines used their noggins and decided to follow the animals. In less than ten minutes they found Santa sitting under a big oak tree, surrounded by sea island animals and pets that’d learned he was nearby. Isis, a cute little Maltese doggie was taking her turn, licking Santa’s face as fast as she could. Next in line, Sally the goat waited patiently with a basket loaded with corn cobs, newspapers, potato chips and tin cans — her special gifts for Santa Claus. Ricky Raccoon offered a soggy hamburger he’d rescued from a roadside dumpster.

Santa wasn’t lost, or at least he didn’t think so. He’d just materialized somewhere else — because he could. Now you see him, now you don’t. He could also become invisible and it was even rumored that he could be in two places at the same time!

When the Young Marines saw the jolly giant under the tree, they let out a huge sigh of relief.
